Welcome to Discover Series: Session 2: The Science behind Skin Health & Fistula Management | Salts Healthcare The second episode of the Discover Series delves into the importance of taking extra care of your skin. In this session we hear from Clinical Research Lead, Mireille Hamson about the anatomy and physiology of the skin and the value of maintaining healthy peri-stomal skin. We then go on to hear from Dr Amanda Goodby who guides us through a more in-depth look at some of the science behind maintaining good skin health. Lead nurse, Maddie White, then shares her knowledge and expertise on both simple and complex cases of Fistula management. Learning Outcomes: • To increase knowledge and understanding of the anatomy and physiology of the skin and be able to apply this in a stoma care setting • Identify specific needs of an individual with an enterocutaneous fistula and enhance your confidence and ability to manage challenging or complex situations Speakers: Mireille Hamson Clinical Lead in Research Salts Healthcare, UK Mireille works for Salts Healthcare as the Clinical Lead in Research where she has a special interest in skin health related to stoma care and new product development. She has the responsibility for offering expert clinical opinion and connecting research with the patient experience. Whilst doing this she still engages in clinical practice as a Stoma Specialist Nurse two days a week, ensuring her practice is relevant and current. Mireille has a BSc (Hons) and has been a Registered General Nurse (RGN) for 23 years, and in 2002 progressed into the specialist domain of stoma care. Throughout her career she has developed her knowledge and practice around stoma care, as well as being proactive in the development of a hospital and community stoma care pathway. She has presented at various conferences at a national and international level and lectured to a wide variety of health care professionals. She is passionate about the world of stoma care and enjoys sharing her knowledge and skills to empower others. Amanda Goodby MSc, BSc, RN, Salts Healthcare, UK Dr Amanda Goodby gained her PhD in polymer science and joined Salts Healthcare in 2013, researching adhesives in relation to skin health. She now works as the Principle skin health research scientist designing and overseeing clinical investigations into the effects of adhesives on the peri stomal skin area, examining quantitative methods to assess skin barrier damage. Maddie White MSc, BSc, RN, Stoma/Colorectal Nurse Specialist, University Hospitals Birmingham and Chair of ASCN UK Maddie has over 30 years of stoma care nursing experience and is currently Chair of ASCN UK, as well as working as Team leader with a team of 10 Clinical Nurse Specialists in a busy acute Trust in Birmingham, West Midlands. Maddie is committed to developing roles within stoma care and providing robust evidence-based support to nurses in order to enhance the stoma care nurses’ contribution to developing practice. Maddie also writes articles and editorials for journals on a regular basis and proof-reads articles for publication. She enjoys presenting at various forums in order to share knowledge and expertise.
