With the nice weather, I couldn’t resist getting Henry and Riley out again to finish up the hikes I had earmarked in the Cashiers and Highlands area. We started off our day with the short, 0.3 mile hike to Dry Falls, a massive waterfall that you can normally walk right behind on the paved walkway. I say normally because it was closed when I went due to snow and ice. The falls were still 10/10, though! We drove to Whiteside Mountain next for a hike packed with views. The top of the trail walked on the edge of sheer cliffs with stunning views. The trail was well-maintained and fun. The only catch was having to carry my acrophobic dog down the back side of the mountain, but she (and I) did great thanks to the Trail Magik carrier. Our final hike of the day was quite the dud. A little-used, rock-littered trail led us under/over/through lots of blowdowns to the edge of the cove at the base of High Falls. Unfortunately, after 1.4 miles of hard work (try ducking/crawling/climbing with a top-heavy, moving backpack), I couldn’t find a safe way to cross from the rocks to the cove’s beach to actually see High Falls. Maybe I’ll return in the summer or with a friend to try again, but my kids’ safety comes first these days, so if I miss a waterfall…oh well. I still had a good hike!
