Painting Maisemore Poly Hives

Building Maisemore Commercial Poly Hives Following on from our construction of the Maisemore Poly Hives this week I started the job of painting them. They need to be painted with Masonry paint to stop the poly material reacting with the paint. I also repaired the broken hive and that seems to have worked really well. There is a type of glue that is specifically for use with expanded polystyrene so that worked well. The paint I used was Sandtex smooth masonry paint available from most DIY outlets. Maisemore Apiaries have agreed to supply me with equipment to stock an apiary with 12 x poly commercial hives complete with frame and foundation. They also sent along two supers for each hive complete with foundation and frames, a twin hive stand and two commercial poly nucs. The hives come complete with miller style feeders and straps to hold everything in one place. Over the coming weeks of the beekeeping season I will record how we get on with these hives and show everything that happens “Warts “n” All”! We intend introducing nucs into the hives in a couple of weeks once we have painted them and will then follow the colonies through the Summer and beyond.
