Series of Tooth Talk Thursday 🦷✨ Hello friends this is Dr. Safavi you Denver dentist from Clermont dental welcome to another series of our Tooth talk Thursday, if you have been following us for the past few weeks you know that we have been discussing the topic of airway and today we will continue bringing awareness to airway issues. Today the topic of our Tooth Talk Thursday is "What is Inspiratory Flow Limitation?"' What do you need to know about it? Please drop a comment/question in the comments below and let us know if you have any questions you would like us to answer or talk about on any particular topics and also let us know where you're connecting from it's always nice to know. Inspiratory Flow Limitation or IFL occurs during sleep when airflow is restricted due to the relaxation of the tongue and soft palate moving them near to the back of the airway as the airway narrows their rate of airflow to pass through is limited while the sounds of the breathing may remain the same the limitation to flow creates a greater work of breathing or effort the oxygen level in the blood may also remain stable the chronic stress of this breathing pattern may lead to arousal so what is arousal is not usually an awakening instead it is simply a disruption in the sleep cycle that you're experiencing There is typically movement increased brain wave activity and heart rate the arousal triggers the fight or flight reflex and also the release of stress hormone cortisol finally IFL prevents you from gaining the benefits of a restful and proper sleep in many people with flow limited breathing it may be accompanied by snoring snoring occurs when air flow is restricted and causes an audible fluttering of the upper airway tissues the mouth structure is one of many factors that can cause the IFL having a narrow airway means airflow is more forceful thus increasing the tissue vibration and the loud snoring sound having a thick soft palate or an enlarged uvula can narrow or obstruct airway air flow when sleeping in addition people who are overweight have extra tissue in the back of their throat that also can cause a narrowing of the airway other conditions can cause if well including sleep deprivation sleep position nasal problems and alcohol consumption among many other factors as part of the diagnostic process your dentist may want x-rays or an endoscopic evaluation to check your airway structures and in some cases a sleep study may be recommended as we do in our clinic complications associated with chronic IFL may include insomnia chronic fatigue syndrome fibromyalgia problems anxiety add grinding etc. Failure to diagnose and treat IFL can lead to more complicated issues such as high blood pressure heart disease and etc. given the potentially dangerous complications arising from untreated IFL it is critical to work closely with your dentist to develop a treatment plan that meets your unique needs and improves your overall health I hope that you found this information helpful it was so good to have you with us today please let us know if we can answer any questions we are here as a resource for you and please let us know how we can help and of course as always keep smiling. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- For more interesting and educational information like this, follow us on our pages or visit our website: https://clermontdental.care/ IG: https://www.instagram.com/clermontden...
