In this video we dig into the true meaning of freedom from an Orthodox Christian perspective. Modern culture equates freedom with “choice” – the power to pick between good and evil – but following St Maximus the Confessor, I argue that this is actually a sign of our lack of freedom. This is what Maximus calls the gnomic will: the fractured, personal will that hesitates between God and non-being. By contrast, our natural will is the deep movement of human nature toward its telos in God, fulfilled in love, communion, and theosis. Sin is slavery because it splits person and nature, turning the personal will against the natural will. True freedom is obedience: freely aligning our personal will with the natural will, and so with the will of God, which is essentially love. Freedom is not “my body, my choice.” Freedom is becoming who you truly are in Christ.
