(10 Jun 2000) English/Nat Belgium survived a huge blunder from their goalkeeper to edge Sweden 2-1 in the Euro 2000 opener and give the co-hosts a great start to the tournament. More than 15-hundred police were on the streets of Brussels, ready for possible trouble as the tournament kicked off on Saturday night. It's the biggest police operation European football has ever seen. The atmosphere between Belgian and Swedish fans was convivial ahead of Saturdays' opening game of the Euro 2000 championship. The supporters drank and sang together in the main square of the Belgian capital, Brussels. SOUNDBITE: (English) "I like it when the Belgium people and the Swedish people are singing together. It's great. There are no hooligans here. It's very nice." SUPER CAPTION: Vox Pop, Belgium Fan Some Swedes appeared to be intimidated by the exceptionally tight police measures. Keen to appear friendly and non-violent, one fan told APTN that Swedish fans didn't want any trouble. SOUNDBITE: (English) "We are afraid of the police. We heard Belgium police will be quite special. Swedish fans are always friendly. We have beer and we have fun. We don't want any trouble." SUPER CAPTION: Vox pop, Swedish Fan Security around the Baudouin Stadium - venue of the opening ceremony and game - was tight. It's reported that police have detained two Germans and two Peruvians suspected of trying to sell tickets on the black market for the opening game. Euro 2000 organisors have made extensive efforts to clamp down on scalping by personalising the one point two (m) million tickets to the 31 games. Some 40 per cent of tickets have the name of the buyer stamped on them, while the others can be traced to the purchaser through lists in the possession of Euro 2000.
