30 Minutes of Sights & Sounds Class 360s in the Midlands Half an hour of sights and sounds of East Midlands Railways Class 360 Desiros. The Class 360s were introduced in 2003 by First Great Eastern, operating services from London Liverpool Street to Colchester, Ipswich and Clacton-on-Sea. The Class 360s were built by Siemens Transportation at their factory in Krefeld Germany. A total of '21' units were constructed, each formed of four cars. They replaced Class 309 and 312 EMU'S from the 1960s and 70s respectively and set new standards of customer comfort. The units being fitted with the latest passenger information systems, Air conditioning, accessible areas and are fitted with 280-seats, 16 of which are first class. The Class 360 units are constructed from aluminium with the motor cars powered using 8x Siemens 1TB2016-0GB02 asynchronous traction motors, this allows the units to reach a top speed of 110mph. When National Express won the contract to operate the Great Eastern Main Line in 2004, some of the Class 360 fleet went through a light refresh, receiving their new corporate Livery of white with silver car ends and navy blue doors. Between 2004 and 2005, another '5' Class 360 units were built to operate the new Heathrow Connect services from London Paddington to Heathrow Airport, these units designated as the Class 360/2s are formed of five coaches and have no first class areas instead being fitted with additional luggage space. The Class 360/2s are restricted to 100mph due to their five car formation. In 2012, Greater Anglia operated by Abellio, commenced operations on the Great Eastern Main Line and announced they would deliver new trains to replace all their existing stock including the Class 360/1 fleet. Working with Bombardier the new fleet of trains to replace all of Greater Anglia's commuter fleets known as the Class 720 Aventra's began construction in 2018. Also in 2018, as part of Crossrail (Elizabeth Line), Heathrow Connect was transferred to part of Tfl Rail and the Class 360/2s were slowly replaced by the new Class 345 Crossrail trains. In 2020, with the arrival of new trains on both Tfl Rail and Greater Anglia all Class 360s were placed into storage awaitingfuture duties. The Current operator of the Midland Main Line 'East Midlands Railway' aquired all the Class 360/1 fleet in 2021 and began operating new commuter services known as EMR Connect between London St Pancras and Corby. East Midlands Railway repainted the units into their new aubergine purple livery. The Class 360/2s remained in storage for some time with '2' of the '5' being sent for scrap in 2022. The remaining '3' however were bought by the Global Centre of Rail Excellence and are now stored at MOD Bicester. The Class 360/2s are planned to be used as test beds for trialing new technology. In March 2023 as Part of EMR Connect, East Midlands Railway started operating Luton Airport Express services using Class 360s, coupling two sets together for more Airport passengers. As of 2024, EMR are planning to refurbish the interior of their Class 360 fleet with repainted walls, grab poles and new seats, however this is still in the planning stage.
