Viking runic inscriptions, carved in stone, have been found in many places in the British Isles. 149 separate inscriptions, written in Scandinavian runic alphabets by Viking invaders, give us a fascinating insight into who these people were, their names, who they were married to, what they thought, and what they got up to. In the annual Hakon Hakonsson lecture, delivered at the Largs Viking Festival in September 2017, Professor Judith Jesch, Professor of Viking Studies at the University of Nottingham, gave this illustrated account of 'the people behind the runes'.
