In almost all countries where communist parties were active, the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact led to confusion, internal divisions and loss of popularity. One view saw the outbreak of World War II as imperialist because the Western powers had refused to ally with the USSR. Others welcomed a major war against Germany. Yet the line of Moscow issued support for the first view via the Comintern. In Western countries communist parties were seen as traitors and suppressed. Only after the German attack on the Soviet Union in 1941 did the course change again and communism once again became associated with anti-fascism and resistance.
