Beenie Man: The Controversial King of Dancehall Moses Anthony Davis, famously known as Beenie Man, is a towering figure in dancehall, self-proclaiming himself the "King of the Dancehall." His career boasts collaborations with global superstars like Janet Jackson and Wyclef Jean, yet it's also marred by significant controversy due to homophobic lyrics and statements. Born and raised in Kingston in 1973, Beenie Man's journey into deejay culture began remarkably early. He won a talent competition at just eight years old, catching the eye of a producer. This led to his debut album, The Invincible Beany Man – The 10 Year Old D.J. Wonder, released when he was only ten. Following this early success, he stepped back from music to focus on his education, releasing only a few singles. His 1993 comeback album, Cool Cool Rider, didn't make much of a splash, but Beenie Man's international breakthrough arrived four years later. In 1997, "Dancehall Queen" became a hit in Great Britain, followed by "Who Am I," which cracked the British Top Ten. His album Many Moods Of Moses earned him his first Grammy nomination, and in 2001, Art & Life, released by Virgin Records in the USA, secured him his first Grammy award. From the turn of the millennium, Beenie Man expanded his collaborations to include international artists like Mya, Wyclef Jean, and Janet Jackson, alongside numerous Jamaican dancehall stars. However, throughout the 2000s, Beenie Man faced widespread criticism for homophobic remarks, even advocating violence against gay individuals. Following protests from various international LGBTQ+ organizations, he issued a public apology. He allegedly signed the Reggae Compassionate Act in 2007, a pledge by reggae musicians against homophobia. Despite this, Beenie Man later denied ever signing the act, adding another layer to his controversial legacy. Do you want to know more about the Reggae Compassionate Act or other dancehall artists?
