Palmyra Atoll is located 1000 miles south of Hawaii and is roughly in the geographic centre of the Pacific Ocean. It is a Marine Sanctuary and part of the U.S Minor Outlying Islands National Monument. The only people living there are researchers invited by The Nature Conservancy or by the U.S Fish and wildlife Service. Heavily engineered by the U.S prior to WW2 the natural atoll was dredged and islands created to aid aircraft landing and ship anchorage. Now Nature is slowly reclaiming this dynamic atoll. Man-made islands and causeways are eroding and the lagoon once dead is recovering where fresh ocean water can now circulate.
