Pixar Pal-A-Round is a type of Ferris Wheel known as an Eccentric Wheel, where in addition to normal gondolas around the rim of the wheel, there are cars that slide on rails as the wheel rotates. Disney differentiates the two types of experiences as 'Swinging' and 'Non-Swinging'. The most notable other type of eccentric wheel is Deno's Wonder Wheel at Coney Island in New York. Should this count as a roller coaster of sorts? After all, the cars do roll around on a steel track. And they are able to roll uphill against the force of gravity. You be the judge. When the park originally opened in 2001, the ride was called the Sun Wheel, and was rebranded as Mickey's Fun Wheel in 2009, but when the pier area was rethemed to Pixar Pier in 2018, the coaster got its new name and theming. A normal ride cycle sees the wheel sequentially rotate to load gondolas in groups of three: two swinging gondolas, and one non-swinging. Once all 24 gondolas have been loaded (so 8 load cycles), the wheel does one entire continuous revolution. Then it goes back to sequentially loading/unloading the gondolas three at a time. Depending on where your gondola is during the cycle, you may have your full revolution early or late in your ride experience. Here, it's relatively early. Since that's the most exciting part, the rest of the ride can seem kind of boring by comparison, but I see it as an opportunity to enjoy a cool breeze while sitting looking out over the rest of the park. Pixar Pal-A-Round is located at Disney California Adventure Park, part of the Disneyland Resort located in Anaheim, California. I had the opportunity to visit the Disneyland Resort over Labor Day Weekend 2022, and on Saturday September 3, 2022 (during an extreme heat wave, no less), I ended up riding all the operating rides at the resort.
