Kīlauea Eruption Update, Day 155: No surface lava, what’s next? (May 25, 2021)

It has been two days since lava was evident on the surface of Kīlauea volcano’s summit lava lake, though glowing hot spots persist both from the West Vent and the crusted lake surface. Gas emissions continue to trend down, with recent measurements in the range of ~100 tonnes per day, while the volcano adjusts underground as seen through monitoring signals and the occurrence of a M4.2 south flank earthquake over the weekend. We examine the most recent imagery, video and monitoring data courtesy of the USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory, and add our own time-lapse productions to the official releases. We discuss live viewer questions as usual, and annotate the data and media for clarity, as we consider what could come next.
