ULTRASOUND CAREER | SONOGRAPHER | THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN FULL TIME AND PER DIEM (PRN) Per diem: Per diem employees work on an as-needed basis. While per diem means "for each day" and not "as-needed," a per diem role applies to someone who may be needed one day but not the next. Per diem workers' schedules can vary significantly from week to week. PRN: The initials stand for pro re nata, a Latin phrase that translates to as needed or as the situation arises. A PRN employee works when called, to fill in for an absent employee or to cover a special situation. The ultrasound/sonographer career is a GREAT field to look into! Once you finish school, you have the opportunity to work in many different places from hospitals and clinics, to doctors offices and specialty labs. Whether you choose to work at an outpatient facility or a huge corporation, it's important to know the type of position you are going to take as a sonographer. There are different shifts and hours out there and you have to decide what type of employee you want to be... there are travel techs, contracted techs, but the most important thing to know if you're working for a specific facility is if you are going to be FULL time, PART time, or PER DIEM (PRN/as needed).
