The land in this video is actually a protected area in Brazil. But 22% of forest cover was lost between 2007 and 2018. And 2019 looks like it could be getting worse. There were 437,000 deforestation alerts between January and September 10th. The Área de Proteção Ambiental (APA) Triunfo do Xingu spans 1.7 million hectares. Though some land development is permitted, a large portion of recent activity is being done illegally. Cattle ranching is driving most of the latest deforestation, as farmers convert land for livestock. São Félix do Xingu, a municipality that encompasses two-thirds of protected areas is the largest cattle-producing municipality. There are almost 20 times more livestock than there are residents. But this illegal deforestation isn't just a problem in Triunfo do Xingu. Researchers say the rhetoric of Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro may have encouraged deforestation.
