This week, we talk to Dr Patrick Curry, author of 'Prophecy & Power: Astrology in Early Modern England' which explores astrology during the time of William Lilly and his royalist friend, Elias Ashmole – an era that marked both the heyday of English astrology, and its subsequent decline, as the sweeping changes of the scientific revolution began reshaping society and culture. We also discuss Tolkien, art, wonder, ethics, ecocentrism and the true nature of divination. Patrick is a writer and scholar with a PhD in the History and Philosophy of Science from University College London who has lectured on astrology and philosophy at both the University of Kent and the Sophia Centre. The Editor-in Chief of 'The Ecological Citizen,' Patrick is also the author of 'Defending Middle-Earth: Tolkien, Myth and Modernity' (2004), 'Ecological Ethics' (2017), 'Enchantment: Wonder in Modern Life' (2019) and most recently, 'Art and Enchantment: How Wonder Works' (2023). A NOTE ON SELF-FULFILLING PROPHECIES FROM PATRICK: "I should have said that the most basic and perfectly acceptable kind of divinatory question is; should I do this (whatever it is) or not? Note the answer is again advice, not prediction. Oedipus got into such terrible trouble because he didn't question or reject the predictive form of what the Oracle of Delphi said; then, trying to avoid it, he made it come true!"
