Takayna/Tarkine is a vast area in the north-west of Tasmania without officially defines borders and maps usually don't display the region by its name. For a quick and rough reference, the Tarkine is bordered by the Pieman River in the south, the Arthur River in the north, the sealed Murchison Highway in the east and the wind-battered cost in the west. Within these borders lies wilderness at its best and most precious: cool-temperate rainforests, wild rivers, rugged mountains, and an untamed coast. Corinna Wilderness Village on the southern end of the Tarkine is a perfect base for kayaking and cruising the Pieman River, for rainforest walks that start right at the village. This unique wilderness, however, is in danger. For decades now, the Tarkine has been the battleground between the mining and logging industry and conservationists. Potentially great mineral wealth and untapped timber recourses clash with a natural and cultural treasure trove of the greatest importance. Within 450,000 hectares of this land in the northwest of Tasmania lies Australia's largest cool temperate rainforest.
