2021 BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo. (full review) exterior interior

Although the 6 Series is no longer in production, having been replaced by the 8 Series, BMW continues to offer the oddly shaped Gran Turismo (GT) model in Europe. The five-door hatchback was introduced in 2017, and it was just revamped for the 2020 model year. Featuring styling cues from the most recent 5 Series model, the 6 Series GT looks crisper and sportier. More importantly, it now packs mild hybrid drivetrains across the lineup. The BMW 6 Series GT is a 5 Series with a fastback rear end The 6 Series GT stands on its own in the BMW lineup thanks to its unique and somewhat weird body. However, this latest model borrows heavily from the 5 Series. We can see a similar grille up front, as well as a similar LED pattern in the headlamps. The latter are shaped a bit differently, though, while the bumper also features unique, vertical outlets to the sides. The profile is also somewhat based on the 5 Series with a sharper beltline that runs through the door handles, sculpted side skirts, and beefed-up rear fenders. The rear fascia retains the design of its predecessor with the sturdy bumper, large taillights, and an integrated spoiler that looks like a ducktail. Inside the cabin, the 6 Series GT is once again very similar to the 5 Series. On top of boasting the same design, it also comes with similar materials and equipment. It features the same BMW Live Cockpit Professional with the 12.3-inch instrument cluster and infotainment display, as well as the modern lower center stack with additional screens and controls. The adjustable seats and the leather upholstery come standard, while the options list includes a four-zone climate system, a panoramic glass roof, and a rear-seat entertainment system. It may look weird, but the 6 Series Gran Turismo offers plenty of luggage room. The tall rear end and the hatch make way for up to 600 liters (21.2 cubic feet) of luggage behind the rear seats. When the seats are folded flat, capacity jumps to an impressive 1,800 liters (63.5 cubic feet). That’s notably more than the BMW 5 Series, which can take up to 530 liters (18.7 cubic feet) of luggage in the trunk. Not only the roomiest car from the BMW lineup, but the 6 Series GT is also almost as spacious as the BMW X5. The SUV is rated at 690 liters (24.3 cubic feet) with the rear seats in place, only 90 liters (3.1 cubic feet) more than the fastback. With the rear seats folded flat, the X5 takes up to 1,860 liters (65.7 cubic feet), only 60 liters (2.2 cubic feet) more than the 6 Series Gran Turismo. BMW is electrifying its entire lineup nowadays, and the 6 Series GT is joining in with a range of new engines paired to 48-volt starter-generator motors. The system stores braking energy in a battery and adds 11 horsepower to the engine’s output. Every drivetrain option also comes with a start-stop system that shuts down the engine at speeds under 15 km/h (nine mph). Engine choices include two gasoline engines and three diesel mills. The gas lineup starts with the 630i model powered by a 2.0-liter four-cylinder rated at 258 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. Then there’s the 640i model with the 3.0-liter inline-six that generates 333 horses and 332 pound-feet. These models hit 62 mph in 6.5 and 5.5 seconds, respectively. Moving over to diesels, the 620d comes with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder good for 142 horsepower and 295 pound-feet under the hood. The 630d features a bigger, 3.0-liter inline-six with 286 horses and 479 pound-feet. The 640d model packs the same drivetrain, but it’s rated at 340 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of twist. 0 to 62 mph sprints for the diesel models are rated at 7.9, 6.1, and 5.3 seconds respectively.
