Mondays at the Mess is a series of talks at Richmond Barracks, Inchicore that celebrate the rich stories and experiences of the local community, past and present. Place Names such as Weaver’s Square, Newmarket, Cross-Stick Alley, and The Tenters to name but a few, all hint at the once great weaving tradition that did so much to shape The Liberties of Dublin. The weaving story wasn’t always smooth and even, it was affected by external decisions such as the imposition of tariffs on Irish exports by Britain and the Act of Union in 1801 and today has all but died out. This talk, led by Cathy Scuffil, Dublin City Council Historian In Residence for Dublin South Central and South East areas highlights the evidence of this booming industry in The Liberties that stretches back to Viking times and looks at how it may now be a key feature in the ongoing regeneration of this area. Richmond Barracks is a building of historical importance located in Inchicore.
