Weldon Schloneger is a retired teacher and pastor who now finds his calling in photography: helping others to notice, and creating a sense of wonder. "Creation Improvisation" is a collaboration with his grandson, Jonah Schloneger, who is studying jazz performance and composition at the University of Central Oklahoma. The presentation combines Weldon's nature photos with original music by Jonah. Here is Weldon's introductory statement: 2,500 years ago, Pythagoras discovered that nature, mathematics, and music were one and the same. He coined the phrase “the music of the spheres,” and he spoke of the purpose of music: “The highest goal of music is to connect one’s soul to their Divine Nature, not entertainment.” My thesis is that the Creator is a jazz composer and a jazz performer. At the heart of jazz is improvisation. You take a musical idea and you see how far you can stretch it. This is a rock. And this is a rock. And this is a rock. Variations on a theme. Divine improvisations. In rocks, in creatures, in vegetation, in planets and stars, the variety is endless, because improvisation has no limits. I wanted my nature photographs to reflect the connection to musical improvisation, so I commissioned my grandson, Jonah, to compose original music to accompany my photos. This presentation is in 6 movements -- roughly aligned with the 6 days of creation. For the next 48 minutes, let the photos and the music connect your soul to your Divine Nature. --- "Creation Improvisation" was presented to Newton Public Library's Fourth Tuesday Photography Club on Jan. 28, 2025.
