Developed and published by Elite in 1988 Follow me on Twitter: / al82_retro Add me on Google+: http://bit.ly/1tPwL1u Ikari Warriors is a run-and-gun arcade game originally developed and released by SNK in 1986. The game is very similar in design to Capcom's 'Commando', which had been released a few years earlier. It's interesting to note that there were two versions of Ikari Warriors developed for the C64. Quicksilver were responsible for developing a version for the U.S. market, whilst Elite developed a number of versions for 8-bit home computer systems popular in Europe. This video and review focuses on the Elite version, but I'll be sure to check out the U.S. version at some point. Once the game begins, the player is thrust on to the battlefield armed with a machine gun and stock of hand grenades. The player can move in all eight directions offered by a conventional joystick and the limitation of a single fire-button is easily overcome by tapping once to fire your gun, whilst holding the button down throws a grenade. What differentiates this game from 'Commando' is the inclusion of drivable tanks that offer some devastating fire-power and bonus protection for the player; be sure to collect fuel to keep the engine running, else you'll be back on foot in short order. So often have I seen arcade conversions fail spectacularly on 8-bit systems through poor implementation, where limited graphics and sound effects only add to the disappointment. The Elite version of Ikari Warriors is a notable exception, possessing an excellent control scheme, ultra smooth scrolling and retaining just about all of the features and fine detail from the original arcade game that makes this a solid port. The graphics might look rather blocky and chunky, but are still recognisable. Crucially, the soldier sprites retain their smooth, multi-frame animation from the arcade and it's this attention to detail that makes the game stand out. When the bad guys are shot they pirouette around before dying, just like the arcade. In fact, you could probably use the phrase 'just like the arcade' when talking about Ikari Warriors on the C64 than any other arcade port for the system. There are even a couple of neat little touches that the development team added to this version of the game, such as the way tanks vibrate as the engine rumbles to life when the player enters them. Unusually for most games, Ikari Warriors doesn't feature separate levels, but the battle is a single, continual level from beginning to end without an break. What is impressive is this has been faithfully recreated on the C64; how they managed to cram the entire game into a single load is terribly impressive. Are there any down sides to the game? Personally, I think it can be way too hard at times. It's easy to get swarmed by enemies and fact that they can shoot and hurl grenades makes things only more difficult. Also, the way landmines are invisible until you're almost on top of them is frustrating as I was constantly blowing myself up before having time to react to their appearance. It's worth noting that the game's coder was John Twiddy (of Last Ninja fame) who I feel was one of the most talented C64 coders of the day. Combined with some cool music by Mark Cooksey and Jason Brooke and top artwork, perhaps I shouldn't have been so surprised that this should be a solid product. It might be as tough as nails, but throw in some simultaneous co-op play with a friend and you have one of the best and most accurate conversions of an arcade game available on the system. #retrogaming
