Join Master Gardener Elaine Williamson '11 and Class of 2026 student Stephen Kiely as they take us through the steps of the winter sowing process. If you have questions about the workshop, please post them in the comments and we'll try to answer them. Here is a list of materials you should have on hand if you'd like to follow along with the demonstration: NECESSARY ITEMS: Seeds Potting mix A container - It must allow light through, be large enough to not dry out easily, and be able or made to open and close. Examples include gallon milk jugs and salad mix clamshells. Markers - industrial sharpies or paint pens work best A tool to poke holes in the container - an awl or drill will work nicely Labels to mark seed containers. Examples are old plastic utensils, cut up window blinds or actual plant labels. OPTIONAL ITEMS Box cutter, if your container doesn't have a removable lid Duct tape to close the container A tub or bucket for soaking containers (otherwise please make sure your soil is very moist to ensure good seed-to-soil contact) Tray for holding containers Waterproof covering (tarp or plastic sheet) if working indoors ADDITIONAL WINTER SOWING RESOURCES: University of Maryland Extension Program's Winter Sowing Guide: https://tinyurl.com/umdwintersowing Winter Sowers - The Original facebook page, quite active / 102675420505 Recorded in January 2026
