High Speed Centimeter Scale Resolution Sprayers for Precision Weed Control

Demonstration of two high speed centimeter scale precision sprayers delivering herbicidal spray (blue dye) to spot spray targeted weeds. The first is a high precision (sub-centimeter scale resolution) sprayer designed for spot spraying cotyledon stage weeds in leaf lettuce crops. The second is a spray assembly designed for controlling in-row weeds in vegetable crops that are close to crop plants with centimeter scale resolution. An action video shows the device spraying weed targets (indicated by green squares) on paper. Crop plants are represented by yellow squares. A subsequent video shows the device spraying weeds that are positioned close to lettuce plants. A brief summary of trial results conducted in 2019 to determine weed control efficacy, percentage of off-target spray and crop injury are provided. Future work includes seeking funding and partners for integrating the devices with an imaging system for precision, automated / robotic weed control in vegetable crops. Contact: Mark C.
