Dr.Animesh Saha Senior Consultant Radiation Oncologist Apollo Multi-Speciality Hospital, Kolkata Best Oncologist in Kolkata What is Radiosurgery or Streotactic Radiosurgery? Stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) uses many precisely focused radiation beams to treat tumors and other problems in the brain and spine. It is not surgery in the traditional sense because there's no incision. Instead, stereotactic radiosurgery uses 3D imaging to target high doses of radiation to the affected area with minimal impact on the surrounding healthy tissue. Stereotactic radiosurgery of the brain and spine is typically completed in a single session. How Stereotactic Radiosurgery works? Like other forms of radiation, stereotactic radiosurgery works by damaging the DNA of the targeted tumour cells. The affected cells then lose the ability to reproduce, which causes tumors to shrink. The high dose of radiation delivered to the affected area not only causes tumors to shrink but also causes blood vessels to close off over time following treatment, robbing the tumor of its blood supply. What are the different types of SRS? SRS technique might vary slightly depending on the machine used to deliver such treatment. Different radiotherapy machines used for SRS treatment are Linear Accelarator, Helican Tomotherapy, Cyberknife, Proton beam therapy, Gamma knife.
