Archaeological digs carried out as part of the place d'Armes area revamping project helped unearth the foundations of the first Notre-Dame Church, bell-tower and crypt. They also helped to delineate the first parish cemetery of Ville-Marie, south of the church. In 2006, the city and Québec ministère de la Culture, des communications et de la Condition féminine called upon archaeologists to examine the graves uncovered on Saint-Sulpice Street and beneath the front square of Notre-Dame Basilica. The bodies were later reburied at the Notre-Dame-des-Neiges Cemetery. The digs enabled archaeologists to unearth bones of some one hundred men, women and children that had been buried since 1683. The information collected gave us a better understanding of the area's space organization, while bone studies helped shed some light on our ancestors, lifestyles, diseases and burial customs. This short film, produced in 2006, won the Canadian Archaeological Association (CAA) Public Communications Award in the Professional/Institutional Category.
