Speaker: Professor Cathryn Lewis, Professor of Genetic Epidemiology and Statistics Head of Department, Social, Genetic & Developmental Psychiatry Centre; Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience & Department of Medical and Molecular Genetics; Faculty of Life Sciences & Medicine Abstract: Genetic studies have enabled researchers to identify variants associated with diseases and shown unequivocally that psychiatric disorders have a polygenic genetic architecture. Polygenic risk scores combine information across the genome to capture part of an individual’s susceptibility to a disorder. This can be used to estimate an individual’s lifetime genetic risk of disease, and is widely used in research studies. The clinical utility of polygenic risk scores has yet to be established as the current discriminative ability is low in the general population. In this seminar I will describe the progress made in developing and using polygenic risk scores, and discuss both their potential uses and the challenges that must be overcome.
