Christopher L. Cooley, M.D., of Eye Associates, a service of Hattiesburg Clinic, is the first physician in Mississippi to offer canaloplasty, one of the latest treatment options for glaucoma patients with elevated intraocular pressure. During this surgical procedure, Dr. Cooley uses a microcatheter to enlarge the eye's natural drainage system, which restores fluid flow, decreases pressure in the eyes, and prevents optic nerve damage and vision loss. "Glaucoma patients frequently have increased intraocular pressure due to improper drainage of fluid within the eyes, which leads to decreased sight because of the stress that is placed on the optic nerve," Dr. Cooley says. "Although canaloplasty cannot reverse damaged eyesight, the procedure is a promising treatment option that can help preserve it."
