Dying Light (Xbox One X) - Gameplay

Welcome to Game Play. A series, of sorts, where I check out various video games and share my immediate experiences with you. Today we're taking a look at Dying Light (Xbox One X). I've played Dying Light on multiple platforms and consoles, and I absolutely love it despite its relatively few flaws and issues. You play as Kyle Crane, an operative sent out on a secret mission to retrieve a lost file by a shady and shadowy government organisation. The fictional city of Harran has been overtaken by zombies and even deadlier creatures that roam the nights. The inhabitants are grouped up in two major factions and desperately fighting for survival and dominance. The file is said to be the key to saving the world from the deadly zombie outbreak so Crane definitely feels the tension and importance of his mission. However, not everything is as it appears, and Crane will eventually have to pick a side before the end. The story is surprisingly good and will keep you interested for the duration of the game. Especially as you progress through the bits and pieces and gather more information on the inhabitants and world around you. The shining aspect of Dying Light, however, isn't its story. It's the parkour gameplay. From a first-person viewpoint you'll traverse the city's vast landscape using parkour and even a grappling hook! Being able to climb nearly every wall and surface can be massively fun and surprisingly easy despite playing in first-person. You'll have to get used to the fluent and at times hasty camera movement when especially running and climbing but you'll eventually adjust. The combat is a mixed back, in my opinion, but mostly fun and engaging. You can use a host of different and honestly awesome weapons to take down the undead via an easy to learn crafting system. Some of these weapons can be absolutely overpowered but it only adds to the overall fun and excitement. I can definitely recommend going melee as gunfire attracts even more zombies, which will make looting a lot harder. However, the combat isn't perfect and the hit detection can be a bit off at times. You'll come swinging a beast of a sword against a zombie's head only to realise that your perfect swing only scratched its ears. It's a minor issue and doesn't happen a lot but I thought I'd mention it. My main issue with the game is the randomly spawning enemies and zombies. Zombies are fun to fight when in large groups but I don't enjoy being surprised from behind when no zombie were there. For instance, you can clear an area and make sure that there are nothing around you. Suddenly you'll get grabbed from behind when trying to lockpick a container. It turns out that a few zombies have managed to gather up by crawling out of various vents and openings without you ever noticing it. It can really be bothersome at times although I understand the developers want the players to be on their toes at all times. But still, I would prefer to be able to clear an area and not suddenly get surrounded by randomly spawning enemies. But you know what? The game is awesome and I really, really love it. You definitely need to check it out before the sequel arrives :) The game was recorded directly on the console to an external HDD. No postwork has been done.
