Frederick Delius - 1862-1934 - This 'performing edition' edited by Robert Threlfall, to whom we owe the survival of this rare gem of an early orchestral work by the composer. The work is dated c.1888 and only preceded in orchestral composition by the 'Florida Suite'. Based on his American experience whilst managing an orange grove on the banks of the St. John's River, the America inspiration was still predominant during the time he spent at Leipzig. What better subject material for an orchestral work based on American folk lore and penned by the great American poet Longfellow? 'The Song of Hiawatha' which is basically a North American Indian love story set in the wildest and desolate regions of that continent, where a human bond with nature was is all consuming. The nature theme must have appealed deeply to Delius, with the cameo of 'lovers mirrored in nature', becoming a repeated and iconic musical metaphor for this composer. There are three major stages to the story longing, fulfillment and loss. The quest for love in nature, finding a mate and in so doing also bonding two opposing warring tribes, the wedding feast followed by a transient happiness before tragedy and loss. Heart broken Hiawatha eventually paddles his canoe into the sunset to find a new life and a renewal of hope. It's life, love and loss just like today!
