Today Marcia talks with Garrett Jones, Grants Coordinator and Advocate Lead for the Greater Rochester Habitat for Humanity Office. Habitat's tenet is the building of suitable and affordable homes in partnership with families in need of a decent place to live. But this just scratches the surface of this multi-dimensional organization. In this podcast, Marcia and Garrett will discuss: The First Time Homebuyers Program Buy the Block Program, 2nd phase International impact of Habitat Critical Home Repair Program Homeward Bound Program How the general public can help Habitat (for more information on all of these programs go to the website at GRHabitat.org): Volunteering at a build or at one of the ReStores "Kitchen Deconstruction" Donating - monthly, yearly, or through major gifts/planned giving Cars for Homes - donate your car, truck, boat, RV, motorcycle Brews/Coffee Brews for Builds "From Foundation to Forever" (Annual Gala) Legislative Agenda: Embracing modular homes as an alternative to traditional stick builds. This program has been successful in the City of Rochester and Palmyra in Wayne County. Ensuring fair taxation of affordable homes. This program enables municipalities to apply a discount to the fair market assessment of single-family homes sold by non-profit housing developers to low-income families. The bill protects local control by allowing municipalities to opt-out if they do not wish to implement the discount. Did you know that after the holidays the Christmas Tree used to adorn Rockefeller Center is taken down, cut into usable wood and given to Habitat for Humanity to build houses for those in need? That's been true since 2007! To find out more about the Greater Rochester Habitat for Humanity, please go to their website at GRHabitat.org.
