Herping in Eleorema stream, a canalized stream near Thessaloniki, northern Greece, in August of 2021. The excursion was completed in two contiguous days and the group consisted of me, V and B. On August 18, we started from the more forested path towards Toumpa. We spotted two ringed doves (Streptopelia decaocto) foraging and later a cicada exuvium on a pine trunk. There were also many ringneck parrots (Psittacula crameri). Lower in the stream we found and caught a large female grass snake (Natrix natrix persa), around 1,1 m and with darker coloration and patterning, absence of the colar although she had the two light stripes and large extent of black on the belly. She hissed and musked very little, and other than a small parasite cyst, she was healthy and strong. Later we found caper bush (Capparis spinosa) just in the middle of a dirt road. Prickly pear (Opuntia ficus-indica) was also growing in a few places. A wolf spider (Hogna radiata) stayed enough to be recorded and escaped. At a lower widening of the stream we spotted many marsh frogs (Pelophylax kurtmuelleri), a juvenile Balkan pond turtle (Mauremys rivulata), which dove into the mud and baby mosquitofish (Gambusia afinis). We managed to catch one marsh frog. Invertebrates like the isopod Armadillo officinalis, the millipede Pachyiulus flavipes and the snail Helix lucorum were common. In returning, we found a juvenile hedgehog (Erinaceus roumanicus), which curled into a ball, and soon an adult of the same species that remained unrolled for longer. Finally we also found a giant Asian mantis (Hierodula tenuidentata), ambushing under a light. On August 19, we started from the same place. We caught a male M. rivulata at the bridge. Later we found a hatchling bent-toed gecko (Mediodactylus kotschyi), Another M. rivulata can be seen from a distance. The same fish, frogs and invertebrates as the previous day. A pair of dragonflies were mating, but it got too dark for identification. On returning, we found another H. tenuidentata ambushing under a light again. Πιο κάτω στο ρέμα βρήκαμε και πιάσαμε ένα μεγάλο θηλυκό νερόφιδο (Natrix natrix persa), γύρω στο 1,1 μέτρο με αρκετά σκούρο χρωματισμό και σχέδια, απουσία του κολάρου παρόλο που είχε τις φωτεινές γραμμές και αρκετό μαύρο στη κοιλιά. Σύριξε κι έριξε μόσχο πολύ λίγο, και πέρα από μια μικρή κύστη παρασίτου, ήταν υγιής και δυνατή. Αργότερα βρήκαμε κάππαρη (Capparis spinosa) να βγαίνει στη μέση του χωματόδρομου. Η φραγκοσυκιά (Opuntia ficus-indica) φυόταν σε λίγα μέρη. Μία κοινή λυκοαράχνη (Hogna radiata), κάθισε τόσο όσο να καταγραφεί και μετά έφυγε. Σε μία διαπλάτυνση του ρέματος, εντοπίσαμε πολλούς βαλτοβατράχους (Pelophylax kurtmuelleri), μια μικρή γραμμωτή νεροχελώνα (Mauremys rivulata), η οποία βούτηξε στη λάσπη και μωρά κουνουπόψαρα (Gambusia affinis). Κατορθώσαμε να πιάσουμε ένα βάτραχο. Ασπόνδυλα όπως τα ισόποδα Armadillo officinalis, η χιλιοποδαρούσα Pachyiulus flavipes και το σαλιγκάρι Helix lucorum ήταν παντού. Στην επιστροφή, βρήκαμε έναν νεαρό σκαντζόχοιρο (Erinaceus roumanicus), ο οποίος έγινε αμέσως μπάλα, και σύντομα έναν ενήλικο του είδους που έμεινε απλωμένος περισσότερο. Στο τέλος βρήκαμε και μία ασιατική μάντιδα (Hierodula tenuidentata) να ενεδρεύει κάτω από μια λάμπα. Στις 19 Αυγούστου, ξεκινήσαμε από το ίδιο μέρος. Πιάσαμε ένα μικρό αρσενικό M. rivulata στη γέφυρα. Αργότερα βρήκαμε ένα νεοσσό κυρτοδάκτυλου γκέκο (Mediodactylus kotschyi) κάτω από μια πέτρα. Μια ακόμα M. rivulata φαίνεται από απόσταση. Τα ίδια ψάρια, βατράχια κι ασπόνδυλα όπως και την προηγούμενη μέρα. Ένα ζευγάρι λιβελούλας ζευγάρωνε, αλλά είχε σκοτεινιάσει αρκετά για σωστή ταυτοποίηση. Στην επιστροφή, βρήκαμε ακόμα μια H. tenuidentata να ενεδρεύει κάτω από μια λάμπα. Παρά τις έντονες πιέσεις, όπως τα σκουπίδια και τα αδέσποτα, η ζωή ακμάζει σε αυτό το μέρος.
