This video continues the restoration of the 1932 Philco 80 Jr., shifting focus from the chassis to cabinet preparation and structural repairs. We begin by preparing the cabinet for refinishing, carefully removing the speaker, grille cloth, and escutcheon. I demonstrate a simple method for protecting the speaker cone by attaching a round piece of cardboard before setting it aside. With the cabinet stripped down, the old finish is removed using lacquer thinner, followed by light sanding to prepare the surface. Attention then turns to repairing damage from previous modifications. Veneer patches are made to cover holes drilled into the cabinet by a former owner. The holes are first filled and leveled, the veneer patches are glued in place, and everything is sanded smooth to blend with the surrounding surface. A broken corner on the bottom trim is rebuilt by carving and fitting a new wood section before sanding it to final shape. Additional areas of separating plywood are glued and secured. By the end of this episode, the cabinet is structurally sound and ready for its new finish. Topics covered: Philco 80 Jr., cabinet restoration, speaker removal, grille cloth removal, escutcheon removal, finish stripping, veneer repair, wood patching, trim repair, plywood delamination repair, and antique radio restoration.
