A corneal laceration can be a devastating injury to the eye. In this episode of A State of Sight, Isaac Porter, MD discusses corneal lacerations and explains the related causes, treatments, and potential complications. Usually corneal lacerations are caused by impact with a sharp object that can cut the cornea (which is the clear covering over the front of the eye). This should not be confused with a corneal abrasion which is only a scratch of the surface layers of the cornea. In a corneal abrasion, the epithelium on the outer part of the cornea, is removed and can heal and regenerate to cover the cornea again. A corneal laceration involves a split in the full thickness of the cornea so that the fluid inside of the eye can escape, along with other contents of the eye.
