Death was never far from the Brontës. In Haworth, it was part of everyday life, from the churchyard visible from their windows to the family vault beneath St Michael and All Angels Church. In this video, we explore how Charlotte, Emily, and Anne Brontë experienced loss and wrote about death in their novels and poetry. From Helen Burns in Jane Eyre to Catherine Earnshaw in Wuthering Heights, and Arthur Huntingdon in The Tenant of Wildfell Hall, the Brontës did not shy away from mortality. We also look at their own final journeys, including the funerals of Branwell, Emily, Anne, Charlotte, and Patrick, and the family vault that keeps them together to this day. Funerals in Haworth were a serious expense for ordinary villagers, and the churchyard had become overcrowded and unsafe, making burial a practical as well as emotional concern. We consider how their daily exposure to death shaped their writing, their faith, and their understanding of love, loss, and the afterlife. This is a closer look at the Brontës’ world, where life was fragile, grief was familiar, and yet the stories they left behind continue to endure. After moving to Yorkshire, I found myself drawn again and again to Haworth, and my interest quickly deepened into something much bigger. My YouTube journey began quite unexpectedly. A lady in a book club in the USA once asked if I could film some images of Haworth for her group. I made a simple video just for them, and they loved it. They said I should make more. I had never really thought about YouTube before, but their encouragement stayed with me. Eventually, I decided to have a go. I made a few videos, people watched them, and then they asked for more. And somehow, here I am. I make these videos in my spare time alongside being a mum and juggling everyday life, but I truly love every minute of it. I especially enjoy the research. There is nothing better than curling up with a book, disappearing down a rabbit hole, and uncovering small details that help bring the Brontë world to life. I also run a small online shop inspired by the Brontës and attend book festivals and literary events across the UK whenever I can. Living in Yorkshire, even though I was born down south, feels like a real privilege when you love this landscape and its literary history as much as I do.
