Some secret silent film history turns up! I was recently given a box of unidentified 16mm film reels, and was surprised to find this fantastically rare footage in the mix. "Rinaldo Rinaldini" is a forgotten German feature seen by relatively few after its initial release in 1927. Currently, this obscure movie is unavailable via streaming and home video. At least one other print is known to exist, having received a screening at a film festival in the Netherlands during 2018. It's just not out there to be seen. At some point during the 1930s, this slightly retitled short segment was released on 16mm film for the early home movie market, then again disappeared for decades. The film appears to have been an interesting mix of Robin Hood, Phantom of the Opera, and peepshow genres all mixed together. Enjoy this tantalizing teaser, just scanned today, with an added Wurlitzer organ score by the great Lee Erwin. It's all we have...for now.
