Rube Goldberg playground design brings big ideas to life through movement, interaction, and playful problem-solving. In this video, Jennifer George—Creative Director at the Rube Goldberg Institute and Rube Goldberg’s granddaughter—shares how her grandfather’s legacy continues to influence how kids learn, create, and engage with the world around them. Rube Goldberg, a Pulitzer Prize–winning cartoonist, became famous for invention drawings that completed very simple tasks in the most inefficient and ridiculous ways possible. Today, that same spirit fuels the Rube Goldberg Institute’s work, using those wacky machines as a powerful way to promote equity and access in STEM and STEAM education—well beyond the classroom. That vision aligned naturally with Miracle Recreation’s belief that play is a powerful tool for self-discovery. Together, Miracle Recreation and the Rube Goldberg Institute set out to bring classroom learning outdoors, creating a playground experience where kids don’t just watch machines work—they interact with them and become part of the process themselves. Through the Miracle Recreation Rube Goldberg Playground Challenge, kids and families were invited to design Rube-inspired playground concepts that encourage hands-on problem solving, creativity, and collaboration. The goal was simple: give participants the opportunity to flex their creative muscle in a fun, relevant way, while thinking not only about the world around them, but about their place in it. Welcoming kids into the design process proved to be one of the most meaningful parts of the collaboration. Designing alongside young creators brought fresh perspectives, visible excitement, and moments where ideas truly came to life—reminding everyone involved why designing for kids works best when kids are part of the conversation. From early sketches and brainstorming to models, animations, and play-tested installations, this behind-the-scenes look highlights how thoughtful playground design becomes a platform for awe-inspiring play. It shows how cause-and-effect, movement, and shared problem-solving on the playground help shape the leaders of tomorrow. At the heart of this collaboration is a belief that play does more than entertain. It helps build the skills kids carry with them into adulthood. As Jennifer explains near the close of the video, “If we can do anything good for our kids, we have to get kids out there talking to each other, playing with each other, problem solving with each other. All those qualities make for a great adult.” 🔗 Learn more about the Miracle Recreation & Rube Goldberg collaboration: https://bit.ly/Miracle-Rube-Goldberg
