To help celebrate Kansas’ 50th anniversary, here is the full sound board recording from the band’s concert at the Springfield Civic Center in Massachusetts on Sept 2, 1979. This has never been presented in its entirety on Youtube before. The show was the last stop on a run of dates in the Northeast where Kansas had played major arenas like Madison Square Garden, Boston Garden, The Spectrum in Philly, and others in the previous week. I am a big believer that it is often the “B” and “C” markets on tours that can have the most enthusiastic crowds because they just don’t get as many top headliners as the “A” markets. That is definitely the case here, as the western Mass fans were full-throated in their support of Kansas on this evening….and the band reciprocated with an energetic show. For instance, you can hear the roars for the intricate laser webs that laced the arena at the climax of the instrumental section in “Closet Chronicles,” and the greeting that “The Wall” receives in following segue. Or the sustained cheering after the dramatic close to “A Glimpse of Home,” etc. The full set list of that evening is here, except that “Angels Have Fallen” and “Opus Insert” are partial because the tape was being flipped over. I am also supplying photos of late 70s/early 80s Kansas shows that have never been seen before; personal pics from my friendship with Kerry Livgren; magazine articles; press releases; Kansas retail display materials; band merchandise; and the full Tour Program booklets for the “Monolith” and “Point of Know Return” Tours. The text for the latter was written by young Cameron Crowe, one of the leading writers for Rolling Stone magazine at the time, who was a Kansas devotee. He later became even better known as a movie writer/director of such classics as “Jerry McGuire,” “Say Anything,” “Fast Times at Ridgemont High,” “Singles,” and “Almost Famous,” to name a few. The line-up of Kansas on this tour was still: Steve Walsh on lead vocal/keyboards/vibes; Kerry Livgren on electric and acoustic guitar, keyboards; Robby Steinhardt on lead vocals, violin, and percussion; Phil Ehart on drums and percussion; Dave Hope on bass; and Rich Williams on electric and acoustic guitars. The audio/video was edited by Mark Hollingsworth and Grace Jester.
