Welcome, everyone, to the July 23rd construction update on the Gordie Howe International Bridge project! I'm your host, Bob Jones. Today, we're diving into the latest and greatest progress we've seen since our last update. So, let's get started! As I flew my drone out to the bridge deck, I received a warning about a manned aircraft in the area. You can see it now! I keep my eye on it to make sure I don't become a safety statistic. Interestingly, two companies in Detroit offer breathtaking helicopter tours that provide scenic flights over the city, the river, and nearby attractions. Every week brings something new as the bridge workers make incredible strides toward completing this monumental project. Let's explore what's new in this update! Now, back to the bridge! The Michigan Plaza is making solid progress, on track to meet its opening date in Summer or Fall of 2025. Everything looks impressive up close as I can get, from the I-75 interchange ramps and service drives to the connecting ramps to the U.S. Port of Entry. Thank you for your support! On to the Canadian Plaza – it's changing rapidly with each flyover! Surface concrete is increasingly covering the plaza grounds as buildings receive essential services and mechanical installations. The Gordie Howe Bridge to the 401 connection is also progressing neatly! You can see landscaping is taking shape with trees and greenery popping up around the site. The artwork titled "Make Joyful Noise" by Jordan Sook will soon welcome travelers to and from the bridge. This circular metal sculpture, made from replica church pews, pays homage to the Underground Railroad history of Windsor-Essex. Unfortunately, we don't have pictures yet, but we can't wait to see the final design! Have you noticed the special 100-foot tall light poles? They feature a design that resembles a flower and could house 5G data collecting technology. But what does this mean for travelers? Let's discuss the implications! This technology significantly enhances data collection across various settings-including plazas and commercial areas. While 5G offers several benefits, such as improved connectivity, it raises privacy concerns. Here are some key points: • 5G connects more devices and collects more data, possibly including personal information, location data, and usage patterns. • As vehicles and devices cross through the plaza, their digital data could be collected and monitored by government agencies. While this technology can help streamline traffic and enhance safety by identifying threats, it also risks breaching the privacy of citizens. Is Big Brother watching? I'd love to hear your thoughts. The installation process involves careful tension management, often using hydraulic tensioning jacks. Engineers continually monitor cable tension with advanced sensors to ensure optimal performance-necessary for the bridge's integrity and safety. Routine inspections assess the stay cables for wear and corrosion. Maintenance strategies-including protective coatings and regular tension checks-ensure long-term stability.
