Santal, a major tribe of Odisha concentrates in Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, and Balasore districts of the state. Agriculture is the mainstay of their livelihood. They observe annual festivals like Errahasim, Nuakhia, and Mahamane, Saharai, and Karama to appease their principal deities like Singbonga, Marangburu, Monreko-Tureiko and Majhibonga. The Santal culture is enriched with different festivals, dances, songs, and music. They dance to the tune of the music, wearing their traditional costumes. In dances, generally, the male folk play musical instruments like drums, flutes, etc. while the women folk dance to the tune of music. The “Kalasi” dance is generally performed in the month of January. The freedom-loving Santals started performing this dance after the end of the era of the feudal regime to celebrate their freedom from subjugation and exploitation.
