With bonus short-talk by Tim Alderton, Research Technician, JC Raulston Arboretum on "Hardy and Semi-hardy Gesneriads". Presented by Sandy Horn and Tim Alderton, NARGS Piedmont Chapter members, with introduction by Bobby Ward, NARGS Piedmont Chapter Program Chair on October 23, 2023. Sandy Horn lives in Cary, N.C. Her rock garden contains many miniature and dwarf conifers that add texture, color, and year-round interest, particularly when perennial and annual rock plants are dormant. A rock garden provides the perfect environment for conifers because many forms thrive in the sharply-drained soils required of rock garden plants. Most of all, rock gardens offer the opportunity to display to best advantage small conifers that might otherwise go unnoticed. Sandy will show examples of how to display underutilized conifers in rock garden settings. Plus bonus 15-minute talk by Tim Alderton, research technician at the Raulston Arboretum, on hardy and semi-hardy gesneriads, such as forms of Sinningia, Gloxinia, Titanotrichum, and others, grown at the JCRA. This program was originally presented live in-person and online and was recorded using a video conferencing service.
