📜 Background “Joy By and By” is a joyful Adventist hymn written and composed by Franklin Edson Belden (1858–1945) — one of the most prolific early Adventist hymn writers. Belden was the nephew of Ellen G. White (his mother, Sarah Harmon Belden, was Ellen White’s sister). He wrote many songs for early Adventist worship and camp meetings, and his work helped shape the musical identity of the denomination in the late 19th century. This hymn first appeared in Belden’s collections in the 1880s, including “Hymns and Tunes for Those Who Keep the Commandments of God and the Faith of Jesus” (1886). It later became part of several Adventist hymnals, culminating in its inclusion as #430 in the Seventh-day Adventist Hymnal (1985). ✍️ Meaning and Message “Joy By and By” expresses the believer’s hope of eternal joy and reunion in heaven — “when the reapers gather home.” The lyrics reflect the imagery of harvest from Scripture (John 4:35–36, Revelation 14:15): those who have worked for the Lord (“the reapers”) will one day be gathered together in heaven (“home”) to rejoice forever. Each verse points to the nearing of that great day (“the day draweth nigh”), while the chorus bursts with repeated joy — “Joy, joy, joy, by and by!” The song’s tone is triumphant yet gentle, a hymn of hope and perseverance. It captures the optimism of early Adventist believers who looked forward with certainty to the Second Coming and the eternal reward of the faithful.
