The Union Pacific really pulled out all the stops for this tour. Locomotives included the #844, the Big Boy 4014, Challenger 3985, both E units as well as the B unit, the 6936 DD40X, 2-10-2 #5511, and 4-8-4, #838 parts engine for the #844. The steam shop is where all the repairs and restoration work takes place on the Union Pacific steam locomotives including the current restoration of Big Boy #4014 which will soon be the Worlds largest operational steam locomotive. The mechanics on the steam crew are now working seven days a week to make the May 10th, 2019 deadline for the driving of the Golden spike ceremony. Progress has been steady as the locomotive is over 50% complete with the majority of the hard work now finished. Locomotive #844 is fully operational and will pull one excursion for 2018. Challenger #3985 was formally the Worlds largest operating steam locomotive but is currently in the middle of a major overhaul. Work was ceased on the Challenger due to the Big boy restoration but will continue at a later date likely many years from now. Centennial DD40X #6936 is the Worlds largest diesel locomotive and is currently operational. Both E units are operational but unknown about the status of the B unit. Union Pacific #5511 is the only survivor of the 2-10-2 class for the railroad. It is not operational, has never been restored, and there is no plans to restore the locomotive. Union Pacific 4-8-4, #838, is a parts locomotive for the #844 and has never been restored.
