The double bassist’s dynamic career took a pivotal turn in the ‘90s when he met keyboardist Chick Corea. This formative encounter led to the creation of the passionate group Origin and a fruitful collaboration with Corea’s label, Stretch Records, which released several of Cohen’s albums, including the seminal Adama. Drawing inspiration from global influences as well as his own roots – including a moving exploration of Sephardic culture through the Ladino repertoire – Cohen has also proven to be a keen talent scout, as seen in his early partnership with pianist Shai Maestro. In this opening concert of the Jazz à Vienne festival, a brilliant showcase of the genre, Cohen distills more than three decades of live shows, recordings and creative projects. Backed by a stellar band – including the young pianist Itay Simovitch – the composer delivers a powerful set. Each piece flows effortlessly into the next, the quintet plays with remarkable cohesion, and certain moments are particularly captivating, such as Yuval Drabkin’s stunning improvised solo on soprano saxophone. Enhanced by the incredible setting of ancient Roman theatre in Vienne, this performance by the Avishai Cohen Quintet seems to stretch time and space – nowhere more so than in the final song, carried by an especially moving melody.
