The Wildlife and Environmental Law Team provides independent and expert advice to partners of the Tree of Life programme at the Wellcome Sanger Institute regarding the legality, and ethical collection and possession of wildlife samples. We uphold the legal and reputational integrity of the programme with regards to wildlife matters and in turn biodiversity. Wildlife compliance covers a combination of elements including protected species (marine terrestrial and freshwater), protected sites (sites protected by law), land access and circumstances of sample acquisition. The laws that govern wildlife compliance span across National, European and international policy and legislations and are broad and complex. The level of protection afforded to protected species depends on the type of legislation; some species are protected under multiple sets of legislation whilst others have their own dedicated legislation such as bats, deer and seals. The team has developed a bespoke Wildlife Compliance Framework and Importing framework, customised specially for the Tree of Life Programme and customised built to operate efficiently through the bespoke software upon which the programme operates.
