Federal Police Commissioner Rodrigo Esparza said Mario Gonzalez Martinez was believed to run the Pacific Cartel and to be a close confidante of Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman, one of the most wanted men in Mexico and the United States. Thirty-three year old Gonzalez Martinez was arrested in the western state of Jalisco, from where he was thought to have run the regional operations for the cartel, Esparza said. Four other men, believed to be collaborators for the cartel, were captured along with Gonzalez Martinez. Weapons, ammunition, a communication system and five vehicles were also confiscated. According to Esparza, the arrest, "fractures" the Pacific Cartel's operations in the region. According to authorities, Gonzales Martinez took over the operational tasks following the death of his father, who filled the position before him and who also had a close relationship to Guzman. Mexico is offering 30 (m) million pesos (approximately two (m) million US dollars) for any information that leads to "El Chapo's arrest. Guzman escaped from prison in 2001 and recently was named by Forbes Magazine as one of the richest men in the world. Since December 2006, 327 alleged drug cartel leaders have been captured, according to Mexican authorities.
