Hello TPW Family and welcome to yet another edition of Bookstore Shenanigans! On today’s episode we’re wrapping up our Black History Month Series with the one, the only, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.! We're going to dive into his ‘I’ve Been to The Mountaintop’ speech and read some of it as well as talk about some major take-aways. I loved that he opened it up with thanks as it reminded me of the Apostle Paul in the Bible for his opening remarks in a lot of his letters to the church. When Dr. King said, ‘But I know, somehow, that only when it is dark enough, can you see the stars,’ reminded me of John 1:5 ‘The light shines in the darkness and the darkness has not overcome it.’ It’s such an inspirational statement to believe in and hold onto, especially in the times we’re in right now! This speech illuminated a time in which we were forced to face our problems head on rather than just talk about it. Lastly, three steps Dr. King encouraged us to take during this time were: 1. Unity, 2. Keep the issues where they are, and 3. Anchor external direct action with the power of economic withdrawal. I love how all three of these steps build upon one another and would not be as effective on their own. This is the Grand Finale of our Black History Month series and I pray you enjoyed it and more importantly, learned something from it. I know I did, and the work doesn’t stop here! As always, remember to stay in the books!
