The Atomists: Democritus and Leucippus The Atomists' philosophy truly is the culmination of everything that had come before them. From Thales and the Milesian natural philosophers, to the pair of philosophical opposites that is Heraclitus and Parmenides, and finally the more recent Empedocles with his use of plurality, Democritus and Leucippus' theories combine and elevate useful elements and insights from all their predecessors and contain a lot of predictions and statements about the world that would be foundational for 19th and 20th century sciences. They also mark the shift towards the separation of the natural-cosmological-metaphysical theories and the ethical ones, something that was the prevalent trend of thought during their time. In this video, we go over what they said, seeing it in context and how the pieces connects to each other.
