Protest at Assam–Meghalaya border affects traffic, former minister’s car blocked

The dispute between tourist taxi operators from Assam and Meghalaya escalated on September 18 after drivers staged a protest at Jorabat in Guwahati. During the demonstration, the vehicle of former Meghalaya Education Minister and NPP legislator Rakkam A. Sangma was briefly blocked, prompting Assam Police to escort him through the area. Sangma also recorded videos while waiting, which showed Assam taxi drivers surrounding his car, shouting slogans and asking him to return. The blockade also affected Meghalaya-registered tourist taxis, which were stopped from entering Assam, leading to traffic congestion on the busy route. The protest followed demands from the All Khasi Meghalaya Tourist Taxi Association (AKMTTA), which has been pressing for a system requiring Assam taxis to drop tourists at designated points in Meghalaya, after which local taxis would continue the journey.
