Buddhangala Rajamahavihara- Enriched by the Relics of the Buddha and Arahant Sariputta & Moggallana.

The Buddhangala Rajamaha Vihara is a Buddhist monastery located about 7 km from Ampara, covering an area of 464 acres. It belongs to the Digamadulla Kingdom, founded by Prince Digayu in the 4th century BCE. According to archaeologists, the monastery's history is as old as the Digamadulla kingdom, and the Chronicles state that the Buddha visited Digamadulla in the 6th century BCE. The exact date of the monastery's establishment is still being determined, but archaeologists suggest it is as old as the Digamadulla Kingdom. A four-inch gold casket was discovered during the archaeological excavations of the original stupa. Inside were three golden lotus flowers, each standing on its stems, with relics carefully placed on each flower. The centre flower was the tallest with Buddha relics, and two Bo leaves on the other two stems had the names "Sariputta" and "Maha Moggallana" inscribed in Brahmi letters. Former Archeologist Prof. Paranavithana had evidenced it. Buddhist monks living in this monastery have been deeply involved in efforts to safeguard both the religious site and surrounding communities during periods of conflict between ethnic groups, particularly throughout the country's long-running civil war between the government and Tamil separatist groups. The authenticity of the background story of finding relics from a casket, coupled with the ancient name "Buddhangala," suggests that this place may have been visited and blessed by the Buddha. Lost in history, covered by a thick jungle infested with wild animals and exposed to the elements for thousands of years, this monastery was brought back to life in 1964 by a brave young bhikku called Late Ven. Kalutara Dhammananda Thero, the chief incumbent of the Monastery, travelled through the thick jungles and cleared the area with the assistance of Buddhists. Like so many other monasteries in the north and east of the island, it appears to have been destroyed by the fanatical usurper at Polonnaruwa Kalinga Magha. From then on, the place remained abandoned for centuries. Ven. Digavapiye Susima Thero, the chief Incumbent, has been instrumental in renewing and sharing the history of the sacred site of Seruwila with the world. Buddhist monks and scholars play a vital role in preserving and disseminating the rich cultural and spiritual heritage associated with such sacred sites. A new stupa was built and uncovered by President W. Gopallawa in 1974, but the government paid little attention to preserving this site. It appears to have been destroyed by the South Indian Kalinga Magha. From then on, the place remained abandoned for centuries. Buddhangala is said to have been founded by Princess Chitra in the fourth century BCE. Prince Chitra was the daughter of King Panduvasudeva, the third regent (and the second king) of the Sinhalese who had immigrated from Dambadiva under Prince Vijaya one century earlier. There is a reasonably well-known episode from the Mahavansa chronicle surrounding Chitra. Please visit: But before that, as local tradition in Buddhangala tells us, Princess Chitra had fled to Buddhangala with her lover and cousin Digagamani. The local northern province of Rohana, which bears the name Digamadulla, was under the control of Digagamani's father. This father, Digayu, was a brother-in-law of that second Sinhalese king, Panduvasudeva. As said, Chitra and Digagamani were cousins. So Digayu's grandson, the young future king Pandukabhaya, grew up here in Buddhangala. However, many places in Sri Lanka claim to have been the prince's exile. The monastery is not mentioned as Pandukabhayas in the ancient chronicles. But an old rock inscription mentions a high-ranking princess named Chitra-Devi, and another one mentions the name of a local prince, Digagamani. Yet another inscription gives the name Karajikagala, but it is unclear whether it means a place name. At the beginning of the 13th century, Buddhangala -Contrary to first appearances, the interpretation of those inscriptions as evidence of a type of monastery being founded before the Anuradhapura period and before the introduction of Buddhism in Anuradhapura under King Devanampiya Tissa has a certain degree of credibility.
