Dumfries and Galloway covers a large area and there is so much to see there, we only scratched the surface and can’t wait to go back to explore more. We stayed for 3 nights and focused on Wigtownshire, which includes Wigtown and Whithorn, as well as the Rhins of Galloway, which is the peculiar shaped peninsula near Stanraer. Deb is an avid reader and has long wanted to attend the annual book festival in Wigtown, Scotland’s National Book Town, so we had arranged to attend some talks at the festival and explored the area around there. On the Saturday, after a book talk, we visited Glenluce Abbey. It looked great, but the structure has become unstable and it was fenced off, making it difficult to film, so that doesn’t appear in the video. We then went to the Rhins and visited Portpatrick, a charming small town on the West coast of the peninsula, where we had identified Dunskey Castle as an attraction. This exceeded our expectations, being a well preserved structure with unique features. You could walk around on various levels and explore most areas of the interior. I was keen to go the Scotland’s most southerly point at the Mull of Galloway, however, after Portpatrick, the time was getting on and the Mull seemed a long way from there down a small road, so that will have to wait for another time. Instead, we crossed the peninsula to Sandhead Beach on the east side, a bay with the west coast of Wigtownshire on the left and the Rhins, looking down to the Mull of Galloway on the right. On the Sunday, we went to Galloway Forest Park, taking in some attractions on the way, but our main destination was the Otter Pools. This is quite popular and though very beautiful, being located in the forest, there is no chance of seeing an otter, given the frequency of visitors. To get there you need to take the Raiders Road, which quickly becomes a forest track. After about 2 miles you are invited to pay £3 at a pay and display machine, before continuing to the Pools for the last mile. The road is in very poor condition, with lots of sharp stones which look like they could easily burst a tyre, but fortunately we made it there and back. That afternoon, we explored Wigtownshire, going down to the isle of Whithorn, from where you can see the 5 Kingdoms on a good day. So, Scotland, Ireland, England, Isle of Man and The Kingdom of Heaven (the last one a bit of a stretch!). Visibility did not allow for that on our visit and the wind was really strong there, making for spectacular waves crashing on the rocks, but ruling out any drone flying. The Chapel of St Ninian sits on the clifftop there, an enigmatic old building, well preserved, standing strong against the forces of the elements on that day. There are so many more things in Dumfries and Galloway that we weren’t able to on our visit and we look forward to experiencing this less renowned region of Scotland again in the future. I hope you enjoy the film.
